SDS has considerable experience with church buildings and other places of worship. In some ways they are very similar to other community and education projects in that the building will house people from all segments of the surrounding community; also, it is significant to recognize that fund‐raising is almost always a major component; however, this building type is very different from others in the variety of functions and activities included and particularly the potential aesthetic richness that may be desired. Another distinction from many other project types is the universal sense of membership or ownership involved and how to best inform and represent so many voices who wish to have a say in the building’s design. Feasibility studies, space needs analysis, conceptual designs for capital campaigns, etc. are typical elements of the initial design efforts in order to help clients make better‐informed decisions.
