Marengo Valley Elementary School underwent renovations and nearly 9,000 square feet of new construction as part of the school district’s facilities improvement plan. The three main priorities of this project were to create a secure entry, add classroom space, and create an improved gymnasium and cafeteria space.
The existing main office was significantly undersized and needed several modifications in order to fulfill the district-wide goal of creating secure building entrances. The office remodel expanded into an adjacent room, providing the additional space it desperately needed. Several alterations to both the floor plan and the technology were made to the existing entrance in order to achieve secure building access. With the additional space and revised layout, the office was transformed and it houses a large reception area, a nurses room adjacent to the reception desk, two private offices, one conference room, a work room, and a staff break room.
Located adjacent to the main entry, the existing gymnasium was failing to meet many of the school’s needs. The main issue was that the gym was undersized for the majority of activities that the school wanted to use it for. Just down the hall, the existing cafeteria was also significantly undersized and lacked functionality due to the fact that is was located in a former classroom space. This same space served as the art and music room, resulting in scheduling conflicts on a regular basis. In order to solve both of these issues, a 5,700 square foot addition was built for a larger gymnasium and the existing gym space was remodeled into a cafeteria and multipurpose room. The existing classroom that was used as the cafeteria was remodeled and brought back to its original function as a classroom, which was repurposed and dedicated solely to art and music. The gymnasium addition also included storage and shipping/receiving spaces, and a corridor that provided students and staff direct access to the playground.
Marengo Valley was also lacking classroom space, so a 3,000 square foot addition was built and included two kindergarten classrooms. Each classroom was provided with its own storage and bathroom space.
This project was completed in two phases - phase one, the office, cafeteria/multipurpose, and kindergarten classroom addition, was completed for the 2017-2018 academic year; phase two, the gymnasium addition, was ready for use November 2017.
