Nearly 20 years after the completion of the Recreational Eagle Center, SDS Architects was welcomed back to the UW-La Crosse Campus to add an addition to the facility. Having experience unforeseen growth in recreational facility use, SDS has been tasked with creating a 40,000 SF addition. This addition had been planned for in the initial design process, however was expected to be a pool facility. The demands of the students however have changed that use into a weight room facility and a multi-purpose space.
The new weight room facility will include a section dedicated to racks, free weights, and Olympic press stations, a section for machine lifting, a cardio space, a weight training and agility track, and private training. The rack section will be sunk into the floor level in order to increase the headroom. Emotional comfort of students has been a driving force in the design process. The design team and UW-La Crosse staff have worked diligently to place equipment in a way to ensure that all users in the space can walk through the space without high levels of intimidation.
The second level of the addition will be a voluminous space capable of supporting basketball, kickball, volley ball, badminton and indoor soccer.
The design process is underway with the hope of construction beginning in the summer of 2017 and completion for the 2018-2019 academic year.
