The Somerset Elementary School was designed to be part of a campus with the Middle School and High School. This allows for the sharing of resources such as full size gymnasium and stage/presentation area. In addition, the campus setting allows for the tutoring of elementary students by high school students and all of the buildings are linked for technology and mechanical controls, reducing duplication of staff and technology infrastructure.
The 96,000 square foot facility's exterior is brick masonry with limestone accents. The grade levels are divided by wing with younger students separated from older students. An ?Inner ring? of special education spaces was created making them accessible to all students. This arrangement allows for inclusion and distribution without creating a need for students to seek a space in an unfamiliar wing.
A ?community use zone? was developed to allow for community use of the facility while the non-community use areas remain secure. Community accessible areas include the gymnasium, kitchen, commons/stage, art room, music room, and toilet facilities.
