SDS Architects Awarded Durand School District Project
SDS Architects began working with the Durand Area School District in early 2014 to perform a district-wide facility assessment and master plan. The SDS assessment process is very thorough and takes into consideration all options for current facilities, possible expansions and upgrades, new construction, enrollment forecasting, district budget considerations, maintenance and operation costs of various options, and more. The documents and plans proved to be a helpful tool for the school board in making informed decisions regarding spending and determining the best long-term value for the district as a whole.
Findings of the study determined that the most affordable and workable plan would include consolidating from two elementary schools to one at Caddie Woodlawn Elementary through a 20,000 sq. ft. addition which would add four classrooms and a gym, and replace roofing. The study also recommended remodeling of the existing middle and high school facility to upgrade existing science classrooms and tech. ed. shops, create a new central commons space, add a wrestling and multi-purpose room and weight room as well as remodel and upgrade HVAC and electrical systems for overall better safety and efficiency of facilities.
Residents in the district initially did not embrace the initial referendum attempt in November, 2014, which failed by a small margin. Continued grassroots efforts at educating district residents about the project, the need, and the long range value supported by the assessment and master plan led to a successful second referendum in April, 2015.
